11 things I miss about NTU
Posted in Untold Scandals by reak at 11:47 pm |

It’s been about 4 months since I graduated. Bye bye school! Bye-bye exams. Looking back to those undergraduate days at NTU, it would be a lie if I say I don’t miss anything. Without further due, here are the 11 things I miss about NTU:

  1. my 1st year dynamics professor who pulled up and adjusted his pants every few minutes. Unbelievable but true. Only in NTU. Ironically, he’s also known to us as Issac Newton
  2. my 3rd year Electromagnetics professor whose English accent was such a way that he pronounced the sound “psa” at the end of every sentence. Weird but true. Only in NTU
  3. my 1st year Maths lecturer who would pronounce the word “example” as “a-Jumple” and the word “zero” as “Jero”. Another 1st year Maths lecturer was renowned for his robot-like speech. Weird weird but true
  4. the legendary Student Union whose only significant job every year was to change the internal shuttle bus routes. 90% of the students either did not know what the Student Union was up to or were not aware that the Student Union actually existed. The other 10% were members of the union itself of course
  5. the university president who ever since he took office, all sort of fees went up. Luckily, I wasn’t affected as I was under scholarship
  6. the legendary Amenities Fee introduced for students to pay for the school office upgrades
  7. the campus rape rumour which was rumouredly rumoured to be just a rumour
  8. my 2nd year Vietnamese roommate who would wake up in the middle of night just that he could sing in bed. Unbelievable but true
  9. my Computer Architecture professor who would have done the 4 million (fake) Smiles campaign proud because the best things she could teach was smiling and giggling. Everytime she looked at the clock, smiled and giggled, we knew it was 30 minutes to go. Time to go home. Did I say time to go home with 30 minutes to go? Oops!
  10. do you imagine I am a security risk? Recently the university hosted the Physics Junior Olympiad event with student whizkids from all over the world including Cambodia. Knowing that there were some Khmer students participating, I asked the event committee whether I could meet and greet them to offer my congratulations and supports for their competition.
So I asked whether I could know which rooms did they stay and whether I could have their contact number. Guess what they said? “We do not allow outsiders to know the rooms and contacts the students for Security Reason”. I didn’t had the will to challenge them about their use of word “Security Reason”. Maybe “Privacy Reason” was more appropriate because it was not like those students were targets of some bad people. And who was I (a very senior student there) to pose security risk? Appalled but later not suprised because in this country, there is an unwritten policy that says “if you want to deny someone and yet can’t find a suitable excuse, just say security reasons”. Ok, enough about these security threats…sorry threads. Let move to number 11
  11. the last thing I miss is the Hall 10 Security Guard (yet another security threat thread). Hall 10 was where my friend Paul stayed, but I stayed in another hall which didn’t have TV. So I came to hall 10 to watch football. Paul was aware that I was there. While I was sleeping in the TV room waiting for the football match at around 2am, the security guard came in and was suspicious of me. I told him blah blah blah. He was a little bit unconvinced but he allowed me to stay on. When he walked out, he met Paul. He told Paul “You better be careful and keep an eye on the guy upstairs in the TV room. He looked suspicious and maybe an intruder from outside”. Paul nodded his head and said “Ok”.

You forgot something such as sleeping in the lecture theatre, skipping the classes, submitting assignment with different author’s name and more…

I am now old and think that I once was like you.

However, I did not have the obvious luxury that you have enjoyed through out your schooling. One day I hope you will realise as I have that these people that you mock and make fun of played an important part not only in your education but also in your social and morale upbringing.

I wish you luck, fortune and happiness as a future academic.
